CHES.Home Monitoring

The CHES.Home Monitoring releases includes an alternative way of data collection allowing patients to fill in questionnaires via their home computers by accessing the Computer-based Health Evaluation System (CHES) online system. A major drawback of traditional, even computer-based PRO-assessment in clinical routine is the limitation to neglect patients’ QOL outside of the hospital. Especially with regard to chemotherapy, this may lead to an underestimation of symptom burden since side-effects and related symptom burden are known to be most severe a few days after application of cytostatic drugs. Web-based testing allows assessment of symptoms at time points which are crucial for the patients well-being, even when she/he is not attending an in- or outpatient unit of the hospital.

To extend PRO-monitoring with CHES beyond the clinical setting, Evaluation Software Development (ESD) has recently developed a software tool for the web-based administration of PRO questionnaires. Naturally, data security has been a key issue in the development process. For web-based PRO-monitoring patients will obtain user accounts at the hospital. This will allow patients to log-in to the CHES web-site and to fill in online-versions of the questionnaires on the internet at home at predefined time points. Web-based assessment will also considerably facilitate the management of data collection in international multi-centre trials. Especially, since it enables institutions not using CHES to contribute to data collection in an easy way.

The home monitoring tool is a web-application and relies on Java for the application’s backend. Therefore, the application can be deployed in servlet containers like Apache Tomcat or JBoss Application Server. The home monitoring website can be accessed with every browser. Furthermore, the traffic between frontend and backend requires encryption and therefore a SSL certificate on the server-side.
